SAUSHEC Housestaff Council

Welcome Trainees!

Congratulations on being selected to train at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) in San Antonio, Texas. The next few months ahead of you will be both busy and exciting: graduating from medical school, finding housing and then making the move to San Antonio, in-processing at SAMMC, meeting your fellow interns and residents, and then finally putting into practice what you have been studying for so long.

As you get acclimated to life at SAMMC, we would like to introduce you to the House Staff Council (HSC). The HSC is comprised of interns, residents, and fellows from every Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. Our mission is to provide a forum to present resident and fellow issues. Additionally, we represent residents/fellows on the pertinent hospital committees that improve educational environment, improve patient care and safety, and foster house staff morale. We also serve as a liaison between the house staff and both the academic administration of SAUSHEC and the military administration of SAMMC. We provide feedback on proposed changes to SAUSHEC and hospital policies. To these ends, our residents and fellows are voting members of multiple hospital committees, and the GME Committee (GMEC). The GMEC includes the SAUSHEC Dean, the Army Associate Dean, the Air Force Associate Dean, and all of the program directors from each program; it meets monthly to discuss and vote on issues affecting resident education.

The HSC meets the second Wednesday of every month at noon and representatives from each program and each committee attend, but all residents and fellows are welcome and encouraged to attend. Some of our committees include quality improvement/patient safety committee, infection control, research, and community integration/volunteer.  To continue to serve the needs of the house staff, we depend on active participation and communication from all the programs at SAMMC. We encourage all house staff to attend our monthly meetings. This is a great way to directly participate in hospital and GME administration, improve your residency experience and gain leadership experience for your future endeavors in your practice and the military.

We will have a representative at your intern orientation this summer to answer questions about the HSC. Your program director can also put you in touch with us for more information. We look forward to meeting you during orientation, and we wish you the best as you transition into this exciting and challenging stage in your career!

Sincerely,
The House Staff Council Officers
