Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program

This one year fellowship program offers training in aspects of adult and pediatric sleep medicine to include polysomnography, obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, nightmares, and narcolepsy. At the end of training, fellows will be board eligible. The fellowship is combined Air Force/Army and typically there are 2-3 fellows per year. Ten faculty from various specialties (pulmonary, neurology, ENT, pediatrics, anesthesia, and family practice) participate in the education and training of the fellows. Fellows learn how to interpret in-lab polysomnography, home sleep apnea tests, multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness tests, actigraphy, and PAP downloads. The majority of the education is outpatient at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC), however fellows cover in-patient consults at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). The fellowship collaborates with the Clinical Health Psychology Sleep Program for management of insomnia, nightmares, and PAP adherence issues. Due to the large patient population and association with the largest sleep lab in the DOD, this program presents a broad sleep medicine experience. In addition to a robust clinical experience, the fellowship also offers the ability for fellows to engage in multidisciplinary and mult-site research collaborations.

Education

The didactic education consists of formal lectures given by faculty, invited guest lecturers, and fellows. Conferences are held weekly at WHASC on Tuesday afternoons. There are monthly off-site journal clubs and multidisciplinary pediatric conferences held at BAMC. In addition there are quarterly research and process improvement/quality improvements conferences. Fellows have the opportunity to attend national specialty conferences during their training. They are highly encouraged to present their research at these conferences.
