About Us

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center is dedicated to providing state of the art, patient-centered and fully integrated musculoskeletal care to active duty service members, their dependents, retirees and all eligible beneficiaries. As the Tertiary referral center for the Regional Health Command - Central, our area of coverage spans the entire Great Plains area from Canada to South and Central America. We also proudly serve the Greater San Antonio and South Texas communities in providing superior trauma care to the severely injured as the Army's only American College of Surgeons certified Level-1 trauma center. Working in the newest Army hospital, we provide care to over 50,000 patients annually and perform 4,500 operations annually. The staff includes all major subspecialties to include hand, foot and ankle, sports medicine, spine, total joints (adult reconstruction), pediatrics, young adult hip preservation and trauma. Our academic program trains 6 US Air Force and Army residents annually (37 residents total) and boasts a stellar record of scholarship to include: eight (8) consecutive San Antonio Orthopaedic Society Resident Research Award winners, eight (8) American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leaders, twelve (12) AOA Resident Leaders Forum selectees, seven (7) Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) Founders Award winners, and four (4) SOMOS Mazurek Award winners.
